Spring Colors, Historic Architecture and Grand Plantations

March 25 - 29, 2018

Leader: William Manning

Step back in time and experience the colorful spring season of historic Charleston. One glance at this city and you know its special. Charleston is considered by many to be a living museum rich in history, made up of 18th century homes and plantations. These beautiful historic homes and landmarks, one after another, are covered in stunning spring blooms. Our photo journey of Charleston goes beyond the town where the colonial past leaves behind the homes of the cultural elite but also into the rural regions where plantation owners built their wealth from the land and slave labor. We'll focus our cameras on the beautiful and colorful Magnolia Plantation, and take a step away from the human element of the bygone years with some creative time on the tranquil coast to enjoy the slower pace of mother nature and escape into the rural regions where back country roads offer interesting photo opportunities.

Charleston is a popular spring photography destination for good reason. Our program for 2018 is scheduled as a photo tour. This gives us greater freedom to move about, photograph more destinations and avoid participants getting lost in traffic, one of the casualties of multi car convoys. Our tour is scheduled during the weekdays allowing us to avoid weekend crowds.

What you can expect. You can expect to be the focus of attention. Your photography is paramount and it's my job to provide the answers that allow you to grow as a photographer. Participants receive an abundance of one on one instruction in the field along with group discussions. You'll discover the artist within and build on your skills. Mastering your tools in the field and knowing what they can do for you is the foundation to a successful photo journey. Photographers want to be behind their camera therefore I make every effort to maximize our time in the field and teach with a hands on approach. Learning to see and knowing what to do once you identify your subject is the stepping stone to building a work of art.

Itinerary. Our daily schedule will vary depending on location and weather. Light is the most important ingredient to a rewarding photo shoot. Photo tours allow us the flexibility to respond to the light and weather conditions as needed. We won't miss any of the highlights, its just we'll photograph them on the day best suited for optimum conditions needed. You can expect early mornings and photograph throughout the good morning light. If the weather conditions are favorable for photography throughout the day you can bet we'll take advantage of it. When afternoon light works against us we'll take in a critique session and/or talk processing and expanding your art beyond the camera. For those in need of an afternoon break, this time is set aside for you as well. Late afternoon and into early evening we'll be back in the field for more hands on photography instruction and shooting opportunities.
