Thailand is known for it’s friendly people. Include this with it’s rich heritage, it’s many temples, unique culture’s, and colorful landscape you have all the ingredients for an incredible photo experience. Our journey begins in the bustling city of Bangkok where we explore and photograph famous city temples, unique markets, unspoiled back streets and the iconic Grand Palace. This Buddhist nation has over 40,000 temples. Temples and Shrines are the heart and soul of this country and many date back to the 13th century. No visit to Bangkok can be complete until you visit at least a couple of these incredible landmarks.

Thai Markets

Markets are very much a part of daily life throughout Thailand. Thai markets are fun, festive and unique places to photograph regardless of their locations throughout the country. We’ll explore the well known Damnoen Floating market, a must see along with small lesser known markets of Chinatown. Beyond the boundaries of Bangkok we’ll explore Northern Thailand where artisans are hard at work creating their handicrafts. We’ll photograph Bo Sang Handicraft Centre where we can see first hand these artisans at work. The night and morning markets in Chiang Mai provide unique photo and shopping opportunities as we begin our day or close out the day of photography.

Hill Tribes of Northern Thailand

Travel photography is about learning, exploring and sharing. There is no better way to experience these values than enjoying a first hand encounter with local cultures. Beyond the blended cultures that make up Bangkok, our journey takes us into Northern Thailand, home to interesting and colorful ethnic minorities, known as hill tribes. There are seven hill tribe groupings: Karen, Lisu, Hmong, Lahu, Akha, Padaung and Mien. Many of these people are migrants from Central China, Myanmar, Yunnan, and Tibet. Our visits to these remote villages allow us to experience and photograph their traditional ways of life.

Yi Peng and Loy Krathong, Festival of Lights

Our trip has been scheduled to coincide with the Yi Peng and Loy Krathong Festival or Festival of Lights in Chiang Mai. We’ll have the afternoon into early evening hours to photograph this extraordinary and colorful event. The festival features beautifully illuminated lanterns that are carried, displayed in houses or temples or launched into the night sky. Originally the ceremony was where people came to pay their respects to the Gods, today the lanterns are donated to temples and people show their respect to Buddha and say a prayer and ask for their wishes and hopes to be fulfilled. The highlight of this event will be the launching of the lanterns into the night sky where we’ll witness this beautiful event with many photo opportunities or simply enjoy this wonderful tradition of the Thai people.

Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Out final leg after a rewarding photo experience in Thailand leads us to Cambodia where we turn our cameras on the ancient temples of Angkor Wat and the cultures of Siem Reap. We’ll explore the central region around Angkor Thom and then farther afield into Banteay Srey, Banteay Sanre, Chau Srei Viol and the Rolous group. Siem Reap is the capitol city of Siem Reap Province where the present day meets the old times of Ankor.
