William Manning in Coal Mine Canyon

My Story

My studio location is always on the move because my projects are just too big to be placed in a studio. Matter-of-fact, my assignments can be found anywhere in the world. These assignments might be a travel or architectural assignment, a book project or sometimes producing a video. I have worked across the United States and abroad in crowded places like Bangkok, the dusty plains of the Serengeti, amongst the medieval structures of old Europe, and many other beautiful and exciting locations.

I have been around the photography industry for nearly 35 years. My career began chasing any opportunity that allowed me to spend time behind a camera. It started with outdoor and nature, then travel related projects, sports, some lifestyle but settled with architecture and travel.

My first break into the world of professional photography with a consistent income came after five years seeking a photography stock agency to represent my work. Those were the days when only a select few were lucky enough to have representation and a highly sought after career move. It didn't take long before my work allowed me to become a major contributor for Corbis in their travel and outdoor division and eventually Getty Images.

The outdoors has always been my first love when it came to spending time with my camera. Sharing my talents with aspiring photographers allowed me to travel the world leading photography tours and workshops. As the photography climate changed so did my need to expand beyond the world of outdoor and travel photography, a genre that every photographer wants to be a part of. This was the birth of my architectural work. Architectural photography doesn't have that same glamour as travel photography but certainly one where making a living is possible.
