Alaska Brown Bears

July 27 - August 3, 2018

Leaders : Eberhard Brunner and William Manning

Few places on earth match the raw, untamed beauty of Alaska. Katmai National Park was created to protect this magnificent and diverse environment. Katmai is a vast wilderness that lays out its inescapable appeal to the adventurous photographer. Snow covered mountains, wind swept passes, rushing rivers, verdant green meadows, crystal clear lakes, isolated coastline and a large wildlife population namely the Alaska Brown Bear make Katmai National Park an untamed land few people ever experience.

There are many reasons to venture to Katmai but ours is for the Alaskan Brown Bear for which the park is famously known. We invite you to join us on this very limited, exclusive journey for a unique opportunity to photograph the brown bear as they fish the streams for salmon, nurture their new babies and playfully pace the lush meadows beneath snow covered mountain peaks. Our journey is limited to 5 participants. William Manning has teamed up with his old friend, world class wildlife photographer and renowned naturalist Eberhard Brunner. Eberhard is a longtime resident of Alaska and has been photographing these bears for many years. He knows Katmai well and knows where to locate photographers for incredible photo opportunities.

What Makes Our Journey Unique

What makes our journey unique? Our itinerary. Mobility might be the best way to describe why our journey is unique. Each day we depart from Lake Clark on our own float plane assigned to us to provide access to remote locations throughout Katmai National Park away from crowds and boardwalks. Our freedom to move about the wild landscapes of Katmai offer a flexible itinerary that allow us movement to the best locations and opportunities to photograph bears as they go about their activities.

After arrival and overnight in Anchorage, we'll depart by air taxi to our remote lodging, Valhalla Lodge on the banks of Lake Clark. We'll enjoy the comforts of wilderness lodging in cabins isolated from roads and tourist traffic. Wonderfully prepared meals greet us each evening as we return from our day of exploration and rewarding photography.

Each morning we'll depart by float plane and land in different locations throughout the week providing a variety of backdrops that enable us to produce a diverse portfolio of photographs. We will have planes available to us throughout the week giving us freedom to move about if needed to capture stunning and rewarding photography. You can be assured the opportunities to photograph bears in incredible settings are wide. The spawning of Sockeye Salmon on the shallow rivers of Katmai welcome sows and their new offspring, a sight and a photo op that won't be forgotten. We have access to boats on scenic Lake Clark for those who want to explore the crystal clear rivers feeding into the lake where great photo ops are are found for large schools of spawning salmon with eagles feeding on their carcasses. We have a very good relationship with the Native people in a nearby village. In July large racks of drying salmon throughout their villages make for unique photos. You can be assured along with incredible subjects you'll have full time access to two experienced teachers and leaders to guide you and provide all the instruction you need to make sure you leave Alaska with a portfolio and memories that last a lifetime.

Photography Workshop Policies

I. Prerequisites:

Participants should know how laugh, ask questions and simply have fun. We don’t discriminate against beginners, just bring a camera along with it’s manual and the desire to learn in a fun and creative environment. If you wish to follow along on classroom techniques bring a laptop with RAW processing and image editing software. Laptops are not mandatory but will allow participants the opportunity
to edit, prepare images to share and allow feedback from workshop leader. Film shooters are welcome but photo labs may be difficult to find. If film shooters would like feedback on your photography please bring transparencies or prints from a past project or photo shoot.

II. Workshop Itinerary

The following is a general itinerary but may vary from day to day and from workshop to workshop. Our first day is typically a meet and greet time along with a short introduction, Second day and thereafter – Photograph on location in early morning light and shoot throughout the morning hours. Break for brunch or lunch as a group and depending on time of year we may take a brief afternoon break. We’ll meet for classroom discussion (could be a meeting room or an outdoor location) on issues pertaining to our theme for the workshop and/or creative techniques. Group feedback is a wonderful way to learn and share. I strongly encourage participants to get involved in the group feedback session. Growth as a photographer and artist comes from listening to opinions from various points of view. The last morning we’ll end our workshop with a group breakfast and make our way back to airport and arrive around 12 noon unless other arrangements have been made. Lots of hands on instruction in the field with short group discussions of various topics dealing with situations, subjects, equipment, etc…
