California Redwoods Photography Mentorship Program

Heighten Your Photography Skills and Discover Your Talents

California's Redwood Forests are a inspiring site to behold and photograph. Northern California's Redwood National and State Parks are home to the tallest trees on earth. Standing beneath these giants is special and to photograph them is a memorable experience not to be forgotten. Our photo journey puts us on location during the rhododendron blooms and likely mother nature will throw in a little fog adding for a little extra mood.

The region most people call Redwood Forests is actually a group of state and national park lands. It encompasses forests, meadows and beaches. It is difficult to say exactly where we will land each day at the time of this posting as most of it will depend on the light, weather and rhododendron blooms. Regardless, you can bet we'll get you to the best locations in the region. In past photo shoots some of best photography came from Redwood National Park's Lady Bird Johnson Grove, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park along with many others.

Oregon Coast

The second half of this tour, we explore the stunning Oregon Coast. We consider the Oregon Coast the most beautiful coastline in all of North America. Adding this incredible coastal region in with the California Redwoods will allow us a wide variety of subjects and situations to explore and learn. We will base ourselves out of Bandon Beach for this portion of the photo tour. Bandon gives us some of the most beautiful seastacks along the coast. South of Bandon is Cape Sebastian another stunning section of the Oregon coastline. This will be a rewarding photo journey. We hope you can join us and stand beneath the giant redwoods and feel the salty breeze come off the pacific surf along the southern Oregon Coast.

March 25 - 29, 2018

What you can expect. You can expect to be the focus of attention. Your photography is paramount and it's our job to provide the answers that allow you to grow as a photographer. Participants receive an abundance of one on one instruction in the field along with group discussions. You'll discover the artist within and build on your skills. Mastering your tools in the field and knowing what they can do for you is the foundation to a successful photo journey. We know photographers want to be behind their camera therefore we make every effort to maximize our time in the field and teach with a hands on approach. Learning to see and knowing what to do once you identify your subject is the stepping stone to building a work of art.

Itinerary. Our daily schedule may vary depending on location and weather. Light is the most important ingredient to a rewarding photo shoot. Photo tours allow us the flexibility to respond to the light and weather conditions as needed. We won't miss any of the highlights, its just we'll photograph them on the day best suited for optimum conditions needed. You can expect early mornings and photograph throughout the good morning light. Whenever the weather conditions are favorable for photography you can bet we'll take advantage of it. When afternoon light works against us we'll take in a critique session and/or talk processing and expanding your art beyond the camera. For those in need of an afternoon break, this time is set aside for you as well. Late afternoon and into early evening we'll be back in the field for more hands on photography instruction and photo opportunities.

Destination Photography Mentorship

I. Rule Number One, Two, and Three

Safety, safety and safety. My number one priority is to make sure my participants return home the same way they came with the exception of a lot more knowledge. Photography tours are about learning, meeting awesome people, and having fun in a beautiful and creative environment. We ask all participants to refrain from vulgar language and political discussions. I wish to keep a positive and enjoyable experience for all. Participants should know how to laugh, ask questions and simply have fun. We enjoy having all levels of photographers from beginners to professional. Laptops are not mandatory but will allow participants the opportunity
to edit, and allow feedback from tour leader.

II. Tour Itinerary

The following is a general itinerary but may vary from day to day and from tour to tour. Our first day is typically a meet and greet time along with a short introduction, Second day and thereafter – Photograph on location in early morning light and shoot throughout the morning hours. Break for brunch or lunch as a group and depending on time of year we may take a brief afternoon break. Group feedback is a wonderful way to learn and share. I strongly encourage participants to get involved in group discussions. Growth as a photographer and artist comes from listening to opinions from various points of view. We will return to the field for late afternoon light into the evening hours. The last morning we’ll end our workshop with a group breakfast and make our way back to airport and arrive around 12 noon unless otherwise stated in tour itinerary.

I love to teach and watch my participants grow as photographers throughout our time together. I am a people person, I find each individual is unique and I truly enjoy building friendships with my participants. Please come with plans to have a good time and enjoy the company of others who share their passion for photography as you do.

III. Transportation

Beginning in 2020, I will be providing ground transportation on most programs. I have decided this is truly the best way to maximize our shooting opportunities. There's always an itinerary but also times when we may come upon an awesome photo opportunity not on our itinerary. Traveling in a convey of multiple vehicles doesn't allow us the freedom to stop. Leave the driving to me or one of my leaders and sit back and enjoy the company of your fellow photographers.

We recommend you purchase travel insurance in case you must cancel due to illness, injury, accident, family or work related issues, etc. The company we recommend is Travel Guard (www.travelguard.com).
